Abstract Mobile computer-assisted self-interviewing (mcasi) is a survey method that can be used among owners of newer mobile phones, users that have started to use the mobile Internet. There are companies offering location-based services in the market today, but they are few and the use is very limited. It is likely that this will change in the future. This paper documents result from surveys of mcasi users in Norway, and from surveys targeted at the more advanced users of mobile phones. There seems to be a demand for location-based services, particularly travel related services. Approximately half of the respondents did not want to reveal their location data to service providers of location-based services. This can be interpreted as a privacy concern. There are also opportunities for mr in this area. The mcasi method is one alternative that is particularly relevant for shorter surveys. Moreover, it is possible to let the user of the m-phone decide when and to whom location information should be revealed in order to address this privacy concern.
